Almost all web sites use CRUD operations: create, read, update, and delete. A blog, for example, will need to create posts; users will need to be able to read each post; the author will likely want the ability to edit the post in the future or update the post; and the author will also want access for deleting posts. Cake makes these operations a breeze with its automated CRUD functions. Instead of writing each CRUD operation by hand, it has prebuilt classes that do it for you. Cake includes the Bake script, a handy command-line tool that generates editable CRUD code based on your database schema and customized parameters.

Every time you make a selection in the Properties window, Visual Studio adjusts the web page markup accordingly. Visual Studio even provides special choosers that allow you to select extended properties. For example, if you select a color property (such as ForeColor or BackColor) in the Properties window, a button with three dots (...) will appear next to the property, as shown in Figure 4-11.

If you click this button, Visual Studio will show a dialog box where you can pick a custom color (Figure 4-12). Once you make your selection and click OK, Visual Studio will insert the HTML color code into the Properties window and update your web page markup.

Getting a web site off the ground is much easier with Cake s scaffolding abilities. With just one simple line of code, you can call out Cake s prebuilt scaffold to render views based on the database. In other words, it figures out how some standard interface views should work with your database and outputs the HTML forms, all without you having to write one bit of HTML. Although the scaffolding feature is not intended for full production views, it lets you begin testing logic and functions without wasting time building views or HTML output.

Figure 4-12. Choosing a color value You ll see a similar feature when configuring fonts. First, select the appropriate control on the design surface (or in the list at the top of the Properties window). Next, expand the Font property in the properties window and select the Name subproperty. A drop-down arrow will appear next to the property. Click this to choose from a list of all the fonts that are installed on your computer. (Don t go too crazy here. If you choose a font that isn t installed on the computer of the person who is visiting your web page, the browser will revert to a standard font. 6 has more about font choosing.) Along with web controls, you can also select ordinary HTML tags in the Properties window. However, there s a lot less you can do with them. Ordinary HTML tags aren t live programming objects, so they don t have nifty features that you can control. And ordinary HTML tags don t offer many options for formatting. If you want to change the appearance of a tag, your best choice is to create a style for your control. If you re a web guru, you can do this by hand. If not, you can use Visual Studio s style building features, which you ll learn about in 13. Finally, you can select one object in the Properties window that needs some explanation the DOCUMENT object, which represents the web page itself. Using this object, you can set various options for the entire page, including the title that will be displayed in the browser, linked style sheets, and support for other features that are discussed later in this book (such as tracing and session state).

So far, you ve spent most of your time working with the web page in design view. There s nothing wrong with that after all, it makes it easy to quickly assemble a basic web page without requiring any HTML knowledge.
